Johnny Appleseed District

District activities throughout the year include functions such as the International Preliminary Convention, where our quartets compete for the privilege of competing in the Society's International Convention that is normally held over the week of July 4th. In June, the District hosts "Apple Corps," a Harmony Education Program school at beautiful Kenyon College in Gambier, OH. I have attended Apple Corps with up to 400 men attending. We receive training in Vocal Production, the Science of Singing or Sound, using computers to improve our training experience, as many courses as we can man with instructors, and JAD has some of the best instructors around.

Another activity on the docket is the District Convention held each October. It is at this fall convention that our choruses compete for the right to compete at the International contest the following summer. A quartet contest at the Fall Convention will determine the JAD District Champion Quartet for the coming year.

(These contests and who is qualifying for what has been changing over the last year or two, right now I can say only that somewhere, sometime in all these contests, quartets to compete in International competition, and for bragging rights in the district, as well as a quartet or two represent the district in Senior Quartet championships held each year at the Mid-winter Convention and choruses to compete on the International stage in July will be chosen.)

We have two main ways of keeping the members of the District, and anyone else with an interest in our activities, informed about just what is happening. The first has to be our web page, www.singjad.com so competently mastered by Reid Joyce, one of our Pennsylvania members. Such is the way of communication nowadays. But it is hardly fair that the web page should be called our first line of communication, as the District Newsletter The Cider Press  has been around much longer. Our current editor took it over from me, bless his little pea-pickin' heart. It is a task beyond belief and Jeff Ulrich is doing amazing things with it. I found when I was doing the paper that my interest really was in improving the photography that we published. So it came to pass that Jeff appeared from out of the Sunshine District, (Florida, where else?) and volunteered to take the paper, and I became the Photo Editor, so to speak.

Jeff publishes both an on-line edition and a print edition, and we find the on-line edition handles the photos much better than the print edition at this time, but he is working with our printer to fix the problem. Below you will find links to some photos of recent contests held within the Johnny Appleseed District. Hopefully, I will continue to cover those contests and activities I am able to cover and the photos can be seen by clicking on the links below.
