The Nerd Nook
Welcome to the Nerd Nook . . .
Why in the world, would anyone call their site, "The Nerd Nook?" The story is brief, my study, den, retreat, or my place is filled to overflowing with books, bookcases, two computers, new and used cameras, three printers, and knickknacks from my travels around the world accrued while I was a pilot in the air force. My library is filled with books on science and astronomy, books on books, books on writing, books on photography, and what others have determined to be the "great books." Even the back wall is festooned with a wall-sized mural of the space shuttle, Columbia, in its initial test flights. With the possible exception of a few books on fly fishing and fly tying, there is nothing related to sport of any kind.
My nephew, on the other hand, claims (I believe facetiously) to read nothing but the sports page in the paper and then only what applies to the University of Kentucky Wildcats. He was visiting one day, walked into my space, grabbed his chest, took a step backwards, took a deep breath and said, "Whoa! Nerdnook!" I took a certain pride in that, so there you have it. (It was also readily available when I went looking for a domain name.)
Among my friends I am known for my near total inability to remain on a track of any kind for very long. With only a few possible exceptions, I rotate through hobbies and interests with abandon. Working backward, I have been a newsletter editor for a Barbershop Harmony District and my own Barbershop Chapter, I have been interested in Astronomy and a member of two astronomy societies, and some level of an officer in each. I have been an active fly fisherman and treehugger and president of the local Trout Unlimited Chapter, I also did their newsletter for a while. I'm sure if I looked in the garage or storage shed, I could find evidence of other avocations long forgotten in which I have participated over the years.
Those possible exceptions mentioned above include singing in a Barbershop Quartet or Chorus, photography, and working with computers. My site will eventually tell you more about me, my family, and just plain other stuff, but mostly it will deal, for now, with my photography and my participation in Barbershop Harmony. I hope you enjoy your visit.
